As the G20 Leaders’ Summit concluded in Delhi under India’s presidency, the United States hailed it as an “absolute success.” In a regular press briefing, the US State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, expressed this view and highlighted the significance of the G20’s joint statement.

When asked about Russia’s absence from the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, Miller acknowledged that G20 members have diverse views. However, he emphasized the importance of the statement calling for the respect of territorial integrity and sovereignty, as these principles are central to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The G20 Leaders’ Declaration included a statement that the “use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible” in the context of the Ukraine war. Without mentioning Russia explicitly, the declaration recalled the Bali declaration and stressed that all states must act in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including refraining from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition.

The declaration reaffirmed the G20’s role as the premier forum for international economic cooperation and emphasized its focus on economic issues, despite the relevance of geopolitical and security matters to the global economy. It called on all states to uphold the principles of international law, including territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The G20 Summit in Delhi marked the first time that India hosted the event, with a focus on inclusive growth, digital innovation, climate resilience, and equitable global health access. Brazil is set to hold the G20 presidency after India, following Indonesia’s presidency last year.
