The BJP criticizes Uddhav Thackeray’s remarks about Godhra and questions whether he is Babasaheb Thackeray’s son.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made frequent visits to Madhya Pradesh in an effort to mitigate anti-incumbency sentiments and internal conflicts.
The leadership of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the central level has once again intervened due to concerns regarding the lukewarm response to the Jan Ashirvad Yatra, which is being conducted to garner support ahead of this year’s Madhya Pradesh elections. Additionally, there have been a series of defections to the opposition Congress, according to informed sources.
Last month, the BJP announced that the yatra would proceed from five different locations without a specific leader leading it, unlike in 2008, 2013, and 2018 when Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan led the yatra before the previous three elections.
One source mentioned that BJP Chief JP Nadda convened a meeting in Delhi on Monday to discuss the reaction to the yatra and the defections. The meeting was initially called to deliberate on the second list of candidates expected to be announced later this week.
Another BJP official stated that the leadership is particularly concerned about the defections of veterans such as Deepak Joshi, Bhanwarsingh Shekhawat, and Girijashankar Sharma, who have been known for their dedication to the party’s ideology. Sharma, a two-time legislator, was denied a BJP ticket in the 2013 and 2018 assembly elections.
The BJP has been in power in the state since 2003, except for a brief period between 2018 and 2020. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made repeated visits to Madhya Pradesh in an effort to counteract anti-incumbency sentiments and internal disputes. Last month, Chouhan expanded his Cabinet and inducted three ministers for similar reasons.
The upcoming elections in Madhya Pradesh and four other states, which collectively account for approximately 15% of India’s population, are expected to set the tone for the 2024 national elections. The Congress party aims to regain power in Madhya Pradesh, where it came to power in 2018 but lost it in March 2020 when 22 legislators resigned.
In May, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed confidence that the Congress would form the next government in the state and win 150 out of the 230 seats. The BJP lost power to Congress in Himachal Pradesh in 2022 and in Karnataka in May.
A third official noted that the leadership is dissatisfied with the “not so impressive” response to the yatra. “The participation of the public is unsatisfactory… photos and video clips indicate a lack of massive support. The party leadership is receiving emails and letters both in favor of and against local leaders, including candidates announced for 39 seats.”
The yatra commenced on September 3 from Chitrakoot and will conclude with a workers’ rally in Bhopal on September 25, the birth anniversary of BJP predecessor Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Deendayal Upadhyay.
The third official stated that mostly BJP workers and beneficiaries of government programs were the ones welcoming or participating in the yatra. “The enthusiasm seen in previous yatras leading up to elections is absent. There is factionalism.”
Incidents like stones being thrown at vehicles during the yatra in Neemuch have been dismissed as isolated occurrences related to the Cheetah project, which has affected the local population. However, there have been protests in other locations as well, causing significant concern.
Certain party members protested against the selection of the Maheshwar seat candidate during the yatra. Residents in Sihora protested against Chouhan’s decision to declare Maihar as a new district, as they have been demanding their area be designated as a district too.
In Mahidpur, BJP workers chanted slogans against local legislator Bahadur Singh Chouhan. Similar protests were reported in places such as Ratlam and Indore.
BJP leader Govind Maloo denied the existence of factionalism and attributed attempts to disrupt the yatra to Congress leaders, claiming that people would respond strongly to the Congress, which he said had failed to do anything for the people during its rule.

PM Modi Unveils Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram Redevelopment Plan on Dandi March Anniversary
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a public gathering on Tuesday in Ahmedabad, launched a master plan for the redevelopment of the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram. He described this initiative as a dedication to Mahatma Gandhi, coinciding with the anniversary of the historic Dandi March.
PM Modi expressed that this project had been a long-standing dream of his since his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat. However, legal complications and obstacles from the previous central government and others hindered its realization.
The redevelopment project, costing around Rs 1,200 crore, is a joint effort between the central and Gujarat governments to memorialize and develop the Gandhi Ashram precinct.
Modi stressed the significance of preserving heritage, stating, “A nation that neglects its heritage also loses its future.” He highlighted the historical importance of the Sabarmati Ashram, emphasizing its global heritage value and the need for its conservation.
The Prime Minister lamented the post-Independence neglect of such heritage sites, noting the shrinking of the Ashram’s original size and the deterioration of its buildings. He attributed this to a lack of vision and political will in previous governments.
Referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat), Modi linked it to contemporary initiatives like promoting local products and natural farming. He mentioned the resurgence of Khadi and empowering rural communities as part of honoring Gandhi’s principles.
Modi also recognized the cooperation of families residing in the Ashram for their role in reclaiming 155 acres of Ashram land, essential for the redevelopment project. He underscored the project’s goal to restore the Ashram’s buildings to their original state.
During the event, Modi inaugurated the renovated Kochrab Ashram, founded by Mahatma Gandhi upon his return from South Africa in 1915, further highlighting the government’s commitment to preserving historical landmarks associated with Gandhi’s legacy.

Delhi CM Kejriwal Attends Court Hearing via Video-Conferencing in ED Case, Citing Confidence Motion in Assembly
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, citing the ongoing confidence motion and Budget session in the Assembly, attended a court hearing via video-conferencing on Saturday in the excise policy case. This appearance followed his failure to comply with the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) summons for the fifth time, prompting the court’s summons.
Presenting Kejriwal’s case, senior advocate Ramesh Gupta sought exemption from his personal appearance, citing scheduling conflicts. However, it was mentioned that Kejriwal may appear in person for the next hearing, scheduled for March 16.
The previous day, Kejriwal initiated a motion of confidence in the Assembly, alleging a conspiracy to destabilize his government. The Assembly is set to deliberate on this motion on Saturday.
In tabling the motion, Kejriwal revealed, “Recently, two MLAs informed me that they were approached by the BJP, indicating plans to arrest the chief minister shortly… Additionally, claims were made of having convinced 21 MLAs to defect and having ongoing communications with others.”
Speaker Ram Niwas Goel accepted the motion for discussion at 11 am on Saturday. This move mirrors a similar confidence vote won by Kejriwal in August 2022, initiated in response to alleged attempts by the BJP to lure AAP MLAs under ‘Operation Lotus.’
Following Kejriwal’s repeated non-compliance with the ED’s summons, the agency lodged a complaint on February 3 before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Divya Malhotra under relevant sections of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, citing failure to join the investigation.
