Shimla and Mandi schools were ordered closed for the next two days due to a “red” rain alert in Himachal
A ‘red’ rain alert has been declared in Himachal Pradesh as rainfall affected various parts of the region on Tuesday. The local meteorological office has issued a serious warning, forecasting “heavy to very heavy” precipitation with sporadic instances of “extremely heavy” rainfall in eight out of the total 12 districts during the night hours.
In response to this alert, Deputy Commissioners Aditya Negi of Shimla and Arindam Chaudhary of Mandi have taken precautionary steps by ordering the closure of all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, within their respective areas for both Wednesday and Thursday. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as a result of this recent episode of rainfall so far. It’s worth noting that earlier this month, approximately 80 individuals lost their lives due to rain-related incidents, which included significant landslides in Shimla.
The Meteorological Department has also issued an ‘orange’ alert, signifying the potential for “heavy to very heavy rains” during the upcoming Wednesday and Thursday, and a ‘yellow’ alert indicating the possibility of heavy rain on August 25 and 26.
The weather forecast anticipates a prolonged wet period for the state until August 28.
Himachal Pradesh has experienced a six percent deficit in rainfall during the ongoing month of August. The cumulative seasonal rainfall has amounted to 752.1 mm, surpassing the normal level of 550.4 mm by an excess of 36 percent.
