India wants to use its ecommerce network to “democratise” internet buying

India is gearing up to launch a government-backed ecommerce initiative known as the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) in a bid to challenge the dominance of companies like Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets. The non-profit ONDC, established by India’s commerce ministry last year, is currently conducting trials in over 85 cities, including Bangalore, with plans for a nationwide launch next year. Unlike proprietary platforms, ONDC is an “interoperable” network that allows buyers and sellers to transact across different apps or services. The open-source network aims to create a larger pool of sellers and consumers, lower costs, and foster ecommerce growth. However, challenges including execution difficulties have arisen during trials, leading to concerns about the initiative’s effectiveness.
