According to official data released on Tuesday, retail inflation in August slowed to 6.83% from a year ago, but remained above the Reserve Bank of India’s target of 4% (+/-2). The slower pace of consumer inflation was attributed to easing prices of edible oil and a slight decline in vegetable inflation. The food price index also showed a decrease to 9.94% in August compared to the previous month’s rise of 11.51%. The Congress party launched an offensive against Union minister VK Singh, accusing him of making “blasphemous” remarks about Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The party emphasized that PoK is an integral part of India. During a press conference in Rajasthan’s Dausa as part of the BJP ‘Parivartan Yatra’, VK Singh claimed that PoK would eventually merge with India “on its own”. He made this statement in response to demands from Shia Muslims in PoK for the opening of the border crossing with India. Singh expressed confidence that the merger would happen in due time.
