Netflix finally reveals viewer data for every title, The Night Agent and Ginny & Georgia are most watched shows

Published

on

Netflix has unveiled comprehensive global midyear viewer data for each title on its platform, marking the first in a series of regular reports, covering over 18,000 titles, including numerous films and shows with viewership ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 hours.

The political thriller, “The Night Agent,” emerged as the most-watched title worldwide in the first half of 2023, amassing 812.1 million viewing hours, according to Netflix. Following closely were Season 2 of the family drama “Ginny & Georgia” and the premiere of “The Glory,” a South Korean series. When considering all seasons, “Ginny & Georgia” garnered the largest audience.

This disclosure by Netflix, the most detailed among streaming services, comes after a prolonged dispute between Hollywood labor unions and major studios. Following two strikes, writers and actors secured increased compensation for their streaming work, contingent on greater disclosure of US viewer data by platforms like Netflix.

Netflix, previously reticent about sharing viewership figures, is now providing a more transparent look into viewer habits, aiming to address concerns from the creative community. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized the consistent demand for more viewership data over the years and acknowledged the need to build trust by fostering transparency.

Historically, Netflix and other major streaming services refrained from disclosing viewership figures, a departure from traditional Nielsen audience ratings. While this approach was initially appreciated by Hollywood’s creative community, recent criticisms suggested that Netflix was concealing audience data to avoid higher payments for its successful programs.

In response, Netflix has gradually increased its data disclosure, including audience figures for popular titles and weekly top 10 lists highlighting the most-watched movies and TV shows in various languages. The recent release covers a broad spectrum of content, encompassing thousands of titles with viewing hours ranging from 50,000 to 100,000.
