“Delhi University Faces Backlash Over Unprecedented PhD Fee Hike”
Delhi University has recently raised the fees for its PhD courses, triggering significant backlash from both students and faculty. According to a report by the ANI news agency, several instructors from the Department of English at Delhi University have expressed concern about the substantial increase in the PhD program’s fees, which have surged from ₹1,932 to ₹23,968.
Teachers from the Delhi University’s Department of English have claimed that the fees for the PhD program have been elevated to an unprecedented ₹23,968, up from ₹1,932.
Meanwhile, the left-affiliated student group, SFI Delhi University, has strongly criticized the fee hike within the English department. They have expressed their opposition to this move, emphasizing that the rising costs of education place a heavy burden on students and hinder their access to quality higher education. They contend that this fee hike is a direct assault on publicly funded education, restricting opportunities and placing additional financial strain on students and their families. The group asserts that education should be considered a fundamental right, not a privilege, and they advocate for equitable and affordable education for all.
Assistant Professor of Physics at Miranda House, Abha Dev Habib, expressed her concerns on Facebook about the Department of English at Delhi University raising the fees for its PhD program from ₹1,932 (last year) to an unprecedented ₹23,968. She considers this fee hike of over 1200% as unacceptable and unfortunate, arguing that such an exorbitant increase is difficult to justify. She believes that this kind of inflation is detrimental to academic pursuits and will reduce diversity while negatively impacting students. She also noted that scholarships and concessions cannot adequately replace the need for affordable fees for all.
Furthermore, she claimed that the fees for PhD programs in all other disciplines this year are nearly ₹4,400. She points out that while the fees for other departments have also doubled, the fee hike for the Department of English’s PhD program is over tenfold.
In response, she urged the immediate rollback of the fee hike, emphasizing that students were informed of this change very late, and it was not included in the PhD Bulletin. Students were apparently given the ultimatum to pay the increased fees and secure a seat or forgo their enrollment.
Associate Professor Vijaya Venkataraman asserted that the fee hike announcement came late, catching students by surprise. This information was not included in the PhD Bulletin, and students were abruptly confronted with the choice of paying the elevated fees or relinquishing their opportunity to pursue a PhD.
