Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi is urging the Central government to declare the crisis in Himachal Pradesh a national disaster.

Priyanka Gandhi made a visit to the Shiv Temple situated in Summer Hill, Shimla, during her tour of the flood-affected regions of Himachal Pradesh. Her purpose was to assess the situation and offer her condolences to the families of the victims.
Priyanka Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader and the AICC General Secretary, arrived in Himachal Pradesh to inspect the areas affected by floods. She visited the Shiv Temple located in Shimla’s Summer Hill, where a tragic landslide on August 14 claimed the lives of 20 people. During her visit, she emphasized the importance of the Central government declaring the crisis in Himachal as a national disaster.
Accompanied by Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and other state ministers, Gandhi took stock of the situation and met with the families of the victims.
In her interaction with the media, she expressed her deep concern, stating, “The situation is extremely distressing, and people have suffered immeasurable losses. As we mentioned yesterday, we must all come together to face this challenge.”
Himachal Pradesh has witnessed unprecedented devastation due to heavy rainfall. The estimated losses currently stand at ₹8,600 crore, a figure that Chief Minister Sukhu believes could rise to ₹12,000 crore. Tragically, 426 lives have been lost in recent rain-related incidents, with 39 individuals still missing. Additionally, over 2,575 homes have been completely destroyed, and 11,000 others have sustained partial damage.
Gandhi commended the solidarity of the people of Himachal who have rallied together to support one another during this difficult time. She also acknowledged that the state government has initiated compensation efforts for those affected by the disaster.
She further emphasized, “If the Central government declares this a national disaster, it will provide significant assistance to the state. Given the current policies of the Centre, it seems they may not fully comprehend the magnitude of the devastation that Himachal Pradesh has endured.”
Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to Himachal began on Tuesday when she was received by Chief Minister Sukhu at the Chandigarh airport, from where they traveled to Bhuntar airport in Kullu. During her tour, she met with families who were displaced by the July floods in Kullu and Manali, as well as those affected by cloudbursts and floods in July and August in Pandoh and Mandi. Her visit also extended to Shamli in Solan district, where houses were damaged due to land subsidence.
Gandhi disclosed that Himachal Pradesh Congress Chief and Member of Parliament, Pratibha Singh, intends to raise the issue of declaring the rainfall-induced havoc in Himachal as a national disaster during the special parliamentary session scheduled from September 18 to 22.
Regarding this, she stated, “We are uncertain about the agenda of this special session or whether these issues will be addressed. However, we discussed that even if they are not, we will represent the concerns to the Central Government and collectively work to convince them to declare it a national disaster.”
Speaking to the news agency ANI, Pratibha Singh stressed her duty to present the concerns of Himachal’s residents to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She expressed her intent to gather all MPs to meet the Prime Minister and convey that he has not mentioned the tragedy in Himachal Pradesh where a catastrophe occurred, and no financial aid has been announced. She also pledged to raise this issue in Parliament, advocating for assistance to Himachal Pradesh during these trying times.

PM Modi Unveils Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram Redevelopment Plan on Dandi March Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a public gathering on Tuesday in Ahmedabad, launched a master plan for the redevelopment of the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram. He described this initiative as a dedication to Mahatma Gandhi, coinciding with the anniversary of the historic Dandi March.
PM Modi expressed that this project had been a long-standing dream of his since his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat. However, legal complications and obstacles from the previous central government and others hindered its realization.
The redevelopment project, costing around Rs 1,200 crore, is a joint effort between the central and Gujarat governments to memorialize and develop the Gandhi Ashram precinct.
Modi stressed the significance of preserving heritage, stating, “A nation that neglects its heritage also loses its future.” He highlighted the historical importance of the Sabarmati Ashram, emphasizing its global heritage value and the need for its conservation.
The Prime Minister lamented the post-Independence neglect of such heritage sites, noting the shrinking of the Ashram’s original size and the deterioration of its buildings. He attributed this to a lack of vision and political will in previous governments.
Referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat), Modi linked it to contemporary initiatives like promoting local products and natural farming. He mentioned the resurgence of Khadi and empowering rural communities as part of honoring Gandhi’s principles.
Modi also recognized the cooperation of families residing in the Ashram for their role in reclaiming 155 acres of Ashram land, essential for the redevelopment project. He underscored the project’s goal to restore the Ashram’s buildings to their original state.
During the event, Modi inaugurated the renovated Kochrab Ashram, founded by Mahatma Gandhi upon his return from South Africa in 1915, further highlighting the government’s commitment to preserving historical landmarks associated with Gandhi’s legacy.

Delhi CM Kejriwal Attends Court Hearing via Video-Conferencing in ED Case, Citing Confidence Motion in Assembly

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, citing the ongoing confidence motion and Budget session in the Assembly, attended a court hearing via video-conferencing on Saturday in the excise policy case. This appearance followed his failure to comply with the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) summons for the fifth time, prompting the court’s summons.
Presenting Kejriwal’s case, senior advocate Ramesh Gupta sought exemption from his personal appearance, citing scheduling conflicts. However, it was mentioned that Kejriwal may appear in person for the next hearing, scheduled for March 16.
The previous day, Kejriwal initiated a motion of confidence in the Assembly, alleging a conspiracy to destabilize his government. The Assembly is set to deliberate on this motion on Saturday.
In tabling the motion, Kejriwal revealed, “Recently, two MLAs informed me that they were approached by the BJP, indicating plans to arrest the chief minister shortly… Additionally, claims were made of having convinced 21 MLAs to defect and having ongoing communications with others.”
Speaker Ram Niwas Goel accepted the motion for discussion at 11 am on Saturday. This move mirrors a similar confidence vote won by Kejriwal in August 2022, initiated in response to alleged attempts by the BJP to lure AAP MLAs under ‘Operation Lotus.’
Following Kejriwal’s repeated non-compliance with the ED’s summons, the agency lodged a complaint on February 3 before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Divya Malhotra under relevant sections of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, citing failure to join the investigation.
